Review the DCnU: Suicide Squad #1

The concept of the Suicide Squad is something that I have always felt was interesting.  I always like the books where the bad guys are the antagonist in the story.  The Suicide Squad is a similar concept to the Secret Six and Marvel's Thunderbolts.  It seems like its a natural fit for the new DCU.

This is a book that when I first saw the promo pictures for I was immediately unsure of.  The costume design of Harley Quinn really disappointed me as I really didn't think it reminded me of the character at all.  So going into the book here I was really unsure of what it would be like.  Saying I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement.

This was just an all around great book.  Glass does a really great job of introducing all the characters here.  Fan favorites Harley Quin, Deadshot, and King Shark do not disappoint.  The characters live up to the classic expectations one would wish from them.

The issue opens up in a pretty brutal scene, in which the entire team has been captured and is being tortured for information.  In a clever series of flashbacks we see how they all ended up in prison and how they were assembled for their first mission only to realize it was a trap leading into the opening scene.  What lies ahead for the team you will have to read to find out for yourself.  But this is a great episode that shows you just how tough and in some cases crazy these characters are.

The trio of artists on this book do a great job of capturing the spirit of the characters as well as detailing out the gruesome scene that is laid out before the eyes of the readers.  At times the artwork really meshes well together.

Outside of the costume redesigns these are essentially the same characters here and that's a good thing.  They are as violent, insane, and loyal as you would expect of them.  The book is sure to be a lot of fans favorites coming out of the new DCU.

GRADE OF NEW TITLE: The first issue is great and really established these characters for just who they really are.  The artwork really works here and I think this is going to be something that a lot of people are going to be enjoying.  The book gets an A and looks like its going to keep delivering solid reads for the fans of these characters.

WILL IT SUCCEED: Without a doubt this book will be one of the bright spots in the new DCU. I think that this will quickly pick up the fans of the old series and maybe even some of the Secret Six's as well.

SHOULD IT SUCCEED: This book does everything you expect it to do and more.  This should hopefully be one of the top all around books in the new DCU.
